2003:  Cream bassist Jack Bruce underwent a liver transplant after being diagnosed with liver cancer earlier in the summer.  He went on to make a full recovery.

 

1997:  VH1 aired the first live edition of their show Storytellers from the House of Blues in New Orleans featuring a solo piano performance from Elton John with commentary from John’s longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin.

 

1994:  The Stone Temple Pilots began a then-record fifteen weeks run on top of the Billboard Album Rock Tracks with Interstate Love Song.

 

1981:  The Rolling Stones went to number one on the Billboard 200 album chart for the ninth and last time with Tattoo You which began a nine week run on top.

 

1981:  Simon and Garfunkel reunited for their first concert in eleven years at New York’s Central Park which was attended by over 750,000 people.

 

1974:  Max Weinberg made his live debut as the drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA outside of Philadelphia.

 

1973:  Gram Parsons died of a lethal combination of morphine and alcohol in Joshua Tree, CA.  He was 26 years old.

 

1958:  Elvis Presley left Fort Hood, TX via train en route to Brooklyn, NY.  After arriving in Brooklyn, he shipped off to Germany where he was stationed in the Army.
