2008: Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart sent a cease-and-desist letter to John McCain’s campaign due to their usage of Barracuda in reference to McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin. The Wilson sisters didn’t have legal sending to send the letter due to the McCain campaign’s lawful purchase of rights to the song.
1998: Aerosmith reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the first and only time with I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, which was taken from the Armageddon soundtrack. The song spent four weeks on top of the singles chart.
1993: Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro became the new guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Navarro remained in the band until April of 1998 when he was fired after showing up at a band practice under the influence of drugs & falling backwards over his own amp.
1992: John Mellencamp married former supermodel Elaine Irwin in Mellencamp’s hometown Bloomington, IN. The couple met on the set of Mellencamp’s music video for Get a Leg Up and they remain married to this day.
1991: At the MTV Video Music Awards at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, R.E.M. won six awards for Losing My Religion, including Video of the Year. There were performances by Van Halen (who were introduced by Pee-wee Herman), Poison, Queensryche, Metallica, Don Henley & Guns & Roses.
1986: At the MTV Video Music Awards at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles & the Palladium in New York City, Dire Straits won the Video of the Year for Money for Nothing. There were performances by Robert Palmer, Van Halen & Genesis.
1981: Stevie Nicks reached the top of the Billboard 200 album chart with her debut solo album Bella Donna for one week. The album featured Edge of Seventeen, Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around which featured Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Leather and Lace, a duet with Don Henley.
1976: Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington was injured in a car crash in Jacksonville, FL. This accident inspired Ronnie Van Zant to write That Smell.
1964: The Animals reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first and only with The House of the Rising Sun for the first of three weeks.
