1998:  Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan was charged with assault and battery for allegedly striking a security guard in the head with a microphone during a concert the previous month.  The security guard was trying to move an unruly fan away from the stage.

1983:  The Clash fired guitarist Mick Jones due to Jones’ problematic behavior and divergent musical aspirations.

 1982:  Howie Epstein made his live debut as the new bassist for Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at the Santa Cruz Auditorium in Santa Cruz, CA.

 1980:  Fleetwood Mac ended their nine-month tour in support of their double album Tusk at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.  Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham told the audience “This is our last show for a long time” as group members worked on solo projects.

1979:  U2 released their debut EP U2-3, which was exclusively available in Ireland at the time of its release.

 1979:  Kiss kicked off the second leg of their North American tour in support of Dynasty at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY.  Judas Priest was the opening act for this leg of the tour.

1977:  Generation X, which featured Billy Idol on vocals released their debut single Your Generation.

1973:  Rod Stewart’s first compilation album Sing It Again Rod reached the top of the U.K. album charts for a two week run at number one.

 1967:  Boz Scaggs joined the Steve Miller Band as their new guitarist.  Scaggs would leave the group the following year.
