1999: Mick Jagger’s marriage to Jerry Hall was annulled in a British courtroom.

1996: Deep Purple performed Smoke on the Water in Montreux for the first time. Smoke on the Water was written after the band survived a nightclub fire in Montreux.

1988: Cheap Trick went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time with The Flame, a song originally recorded by the band just to appease their record label.

1977: Elvis Costello quit his day job as a computer programmer just as his first album My Aim is True is set to be released.

1956: Dick Clark appeared on television for the first time as the host of American Bandstand.

1955: Bill Haley and his Comets reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with Rock Around the Clock, the first rock n’ roll song to hit number one on the singles chart.
