May 17th

2003: Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland was arrested in Los Angeles, CA after police stopped him for driving without lights shortly before midnight. Cocaine & heroin are found in his car.

2001: R.E.M. play their only North American concert, a free concert in Toronto at 12:30 p.m. in support of their album Reveal. Attendance for this show was estimated at 20,000.

1999: Bruce Fairbairn, producer for artists such as Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, & Kiss, is found dead in his Vancouver home shortly after completing recording sessions for Yes’ album The Ladder.

1987: A fire sweeps through Tom Petty’s home in Encino, CA & destroyed everything in except for a few guitars & tapes.

1980: Peter Criss departed from Kiss shortly after the release of Unmasked. Criss didn’t contribute in the recording on Unmasked despite being featured on the album cover.

1975: Elton John’s album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was released & certified platinum. This was the first album to be certified platinum on the first day of release.
