1998: Bernie Taupin’s hand-written lyrics for Elton John’s Candle in the Wind ‘97 sold for $442,500 at Christie’s in Los Angeles. The proceeds benefitted the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

1992: Motley Crue fired singer Vince Neil, claiming Neil didn’t have a passion for music. Neil claimed he was fired for taking a stand against the group’s new musical direction. Neil later re-joined Motley Crue in 1997.

1983: The Rolling Stones’ concert film documentary Let’s Spend The Night Together, which was a film on their 1981 North American tour in support of Tattoo You premiered in New York City.

1982: U2 kicked off their fourth North American tour aboard the SS President Riverboat as it floated along the Mississippi River in New Orleans.

1967: The Monkees issued a statement stating that they would play all their own instruments on future recordings, in light of public furor over being a manufactured band.

More of the Monkees by The Monkees jumped from 122 to number one for the first of 18 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 album chart.

1965: Ringo Starr married longtime girlfriend Maureen Cox at Caxton Hall Register Office in London. Manager Brian Epstein was the best man. Starr’s bandmates in The Beatles were in attendance with the exception of Paul McCartney who was on vacation.
